Lucky Star is a friendly spot for Tex-Mex fare

When the surviving members of the original Twin Lakes Tennis Club (circa 1975) hit the courts these days, it’s usually in neighboring Burlington. And since we are all now in the “55 and over” age group, we definitely require food and beverage — along with plenty of Aleve — to hasten our recovery after two or three hours on the court.

The venue of choice is inevitably Lucky Star Pub and Eatery located on Milwaukee Avenue. Finish the match a little early and arrive before 11 a.m. for a Bloody Mary — hey, we’re retired — and one of the many breakfast specials. If the match runs a little longer, make it a margarita with complimentary chips and salsa, and check out the lunch specials which kick in at 11.

Breakfast or lunch, you’ll be welcomed by a friendly and outgoing waitstaff to the bustling dining room, the bar seating area or the outdoor patio.

Although a varied menu is available — gourmet burgers, sandwiches, steaks, chops, ribs, pasta, and seafood —there is a clear Tex-Mex emphasis: Fajitas, South Cali, and an array of offerings from the aforementioned breakfast and lunch specials including — but not limited to breakfast nachos, the Mexican skillet, and chilaquiles; or lunch fare such as chile relleno with three cheeses, chicken or pork tamales enchilada style, and the naked burrito. Two sure bets: Belgian waffle with fruit compote for breakfast and Parmesan crusted chicken sandwich with cheese for lunch. One “must try” item: the chicken tortillas soup, available on Tuesdays. It rivals anything from the Southwest!

Tennis players or not, area residents stopping at Burlington’s Lucky Star will be treated to overly generous portions of well-prepared food at more than reasonable prices. Plan on taking a doggy bag home with you!
